AmeriCorps Construction Site Assistant
Position Description
Habitat for Humanity East Bay Mission Statement:
To create successful homeownership opportunities for families with limited incomes by building sustainable housing and revitalizing neighborhoods.
Position Summary:
Educate and build positive relationships with volunteers and supporters to further HEB’s mission. Perform construction tasks on Habitat homes with volunteers and Habitat partner families. Provide leadership, training and supervision to unskilled volunteers.
Strategic Plan:
Develop programs and activities that are consistent with the strategic plan goals and objectives that pertain to the construction program.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Act as a co-host to homeowners and volunteers by welcoming them, signing them in, helping them prepare for the day, and helping them complete their tasks.
- Orient new volunteers to HEB by answering questions on HEB history, policy, and programs.
- Help to create a work environment that is cheerful, productive, and inclusive of all volunteers.
- Assist the Site Supervisors and Director of construction in day-to-day construction activities. Duties may include:
- All aspects of home building
- Trouble-shooting mechanical problems
- Being responsible for tool and site organization
- Picking up materials/lumber/supplies for job site
- Site clean-up and maintenance
- Assisting skilled tradespeople
- Leading groups of volunteers as needed in specific work activities
- Assist with maintenance problems at other HEB properties.
- Assist in pick-up and delivery of donated items to warehouse and/or ReStore.
- Give “Habitat 101” orientation at the start of each workday.
- Help with monthly HEB tour and other speaking gigs on behalf of HEB.
Time Commitment:
Full-time. Tuesday - Saturday. 8 AM - 4:30 PM. 40 hours per week.
Reports directly to: Site Superintendent, Construction Department
Evaluations:
Written performance reviews will be provided in accordance with AmeriCorps and HEB policy
Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills:
- Minimum requirement is High School diploma or GED. Some college is helpful.
- Looking for applicants with leadership skills and some manual labor experience.
- Experience with Habitat for Humanity is helpful.
- Construction experience is very helpful.
Physical Requirements to Perform Duties:
Must be able to perform manual labor at a construction site
