2008 Earth Day Build-A-Thon
The 2008 Earth Day Build-A-Thon was a success! From April 19th through 22nd, over 250 community supporters converged on the Edes Avenue development in Oakland to completely frame six houses from foundations to roofs. Those 250 supporters collectively raised $125,000, from among 1,100 donors, funding the purchase of all the framing lumber needed for the event. Many thanks to everyone who participated!

The Earth Day Build-A-Thon is Habitat for Humanity East Bay's celebration of green building. We build green to take better care of our environment, our partner families, and our volunteers. Building green makes our program economically and ecologically sustainable, so that we can continue to serve families in our community. Building green also enables low-income families to enjoy the health and economic benefits of a green home and to be agents of positive environmental change.
Our Build-A-Thon is an accelerated build. While it would typically take several months to completely frame six homes, we will aim to do just that in only four days! To accomplish such a tremendous feat requires the participation of hundreds of community supporters. Building faster enables families to move into their homes sooner. The homes we will build will continue to transform a former auto salvage yard in East Oakland into a healthy community for 54 deserving families. The Build-A-Thon is different than a typical Habitat build day. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, and snacks, and morning and lunchtime programs with “Habitat Olympic” games. T-shirts will be provided. No construction experience necessary!
The Earth Day Build-A-Thon is not only our biggest building event of the year, it is also our biggest fundraising event. Participants commit to raising funds, as they would for a walk-a-thon or bike-a-thon, to help share with us the cost of building materials. What distinguishes the Build-A-Thon from other pledge-a-thons is that, in addition to raising funds, volunteer participation results in a tangible solution! The pledge-raising requirement is $200 per day - ask ten supporters for just $20! Create a personalized fundraising web page to make pledge-raising fun.
