Nancy and Kim Lisiak

Nancy and Kim Lisiak are a mother-daughter tour de force who, in addition to volunteering previously on the construction site, have recently dedicated five consecutive Saturdays to volunteering at the ReStore. Thanks to this power-duo, the paint section in the store is now thoroughly organized; customers now have an improved shopping experience, which leads to more sales and higher revenue for Habitat East Bay's construction programs. Jody Chamberlin, the ReStore Coordinator, attests that Nancy and Kim are our all-star mother-daughter team. They both bring energy, creativity, organization, and overall excitement to the store." Come to the ReStore to check out Nancy and Kim's improvements, and you may walk away with a pretty new color for your own living room walls!

Kim is a full time high school senior who is a high-level gymnast and diver. When Kim is not at practice, she takes piano lessons and volunteers at school and in the community through the Diablo Valley National Charity League (DVNCL). DVNCL is a philanthropic organization that strives to provide opportunities for mothers and daughters to volunteer and attend cultural or educational events together. Kim will be attending the University of Notre Dame this fall and will participate on the diving team. Nancy is a full-time mom for Kim and her brother Tommy and wife of husband Jim. When Nancy is not volunteering at the kid's schools, church, or for DVNCL, she takes care of the home, attends Bible study, hikes, cooks, plays golf, and reads.

What is your current role and level of involvement with us?
We started working at Habitat East Bay construction sites when Kim turned 16 a few months ago, and then we saw the the ReStore was looking for help. Our goal was to work in the paint department until it was completely organized and was easy to maintain with signs and a chart for other volunteers to look at when shelving new product.

What motivates you to continue volunteering with Habitat East Bay?
The experience is rewarding. We know the work we do for Habitat directly benefits someone who needs community love and assistance. Also, the staff is easy-going, friendly, helpful and hard- working.

Why do you make volunteering for Habitat East Bay a priority?
Because we like to volunteer together and, through the National Charity League, Kim had set a goal of how many hours she would like to give and we planned them into our calendars.

What have been your most memorable experiences?
We felt most useful working in the paint department of the Restore. The department needed organizing so that customers could easily locate and purchase the type of paint they needed. We cleaned off all the paint lids, painted them with the color that was inside the can, sorted them by interior, exterior, flat/satin, semi-gloss, and quart, gallon or five-gallon. Kim made signs, not only for the paint department, but also for other displays throughout the store.

What are your future projects or goals at Habitat East Bay?
We hope to help out in the paint department again, before Kim goes off to college.

How does the mission and philosophy of Habitat East Bay fit in your own life values?
We believe in helping others learn how to help themselves.
