Muffy Mallory

Muffy Mallory first volunteered with Habitat East Bay on January 19th - this year's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. While the construction site wasn't quite up her alley, she luckily decided that volunteering with Habitat East Bay was. Since then she has become an essential office volunteer assisting with Volunteer Programs. "Muffy's dedication to helping us out is invaluable," says Megan Sallabedra, Volunteer Coordinator, who works closely with Muffy in her weekly shifts at the Downtown Oakland office. "Her contribution allows us to be organized and efficient - the scope of our Volunteer Program is better because of what she is able to accomplish." We are incredibly lucky to have Muffy as part of our HEB volunteer team. Read about Muffy's experience, in her own words.

"When I was laid off from my job and trying to figure out what I could do with my free time other than scour the internet for jobs, I decided that I needed to put my time and talents to good use. I had volunteered at Habitat in New Orleans and in Oakland for the January 19th National Day of Service, helping to build houses at the Edes Avenue development. I wanted to do more so I volunteered to work in Habitat's Oakland office doing data entry and any other tasks that they needed me to do. I was immediately captivated by the energy of the people working there. The data I was entering involved the construction volunteers who had been working at Edes the previous weeks. It may sound boring but I was intrigued by the names, the number of people who are dedicated repeat volunteers, and the different groups: the Women's Crew, the Green Team, and the family members who would be living in the homes that were being built. I also liked the idea that the development had "green" elements, including solar panels on the roofs.

I began my work a couple of months before the Earth Day Build-A-Thon in April. I was in college when the first Earth Day occurred, a time of upheaval in our country, and I embraced the idea of it. At Habitat, I helped input the names of the hundreds of volunteers who had committed anywhere from one to four days of steady building on the 28 homes of the second phase of the development. The first phase, next door, had been completed last year so everyone could see the finished product of what they had been working on.

It never ceases to astound me to see the number of people who volunteer day after day, week after week. In this economic time, it is inspiring to see the number of people donating their time and money to such a terrific organization as Habitat. More and more people need the help that Habitat can afford. I am thrilled to be a small part of it."

I'm interested in volunteering with this organization in my area or close to it with my kids. I think they would enjoy it and I know I would. Please let me know where I can go to checkout places to volunteer on the weekends.
