Habitat for Humanity East BayPatricia and Jorge Guardado, Habitat East Bay’s third partner family, always knew that owning a home would provide their family the financial security and stability that they needed to thrive. The problem was that they could never get ahead despite the fact that they both worked full time.
Veronica Pridgen has always believed in teaching her children the value of believing in themselves and working hard. Habitat, for her, embodied those values of hope, hard work and empowerment. The alignment of these values, in Veronica’s opinion, made the Habitat homeownership program the perfect fit, but there was one hurdle that needed her attention first.
For Quang Ma and Binh Lu having a strong family is essential to the success of the individual and their children. Quang and Binh took a risk when they of immigrated from Vietnam in hopes of creating a better future for their kids, Chan Ma (16 year-old daughter) and Du Ma (13 year-old son). There goals were simple: provide their children a life with opportunity and the freedom to express themselves. Although these goals were simple, reaching them has not.
"Being a Habitat family and benefitting from people’s kindness has touched our hearts. We want to continue working and volunteering with Habitat because we want to support the organization that has positively affected our lives," Christian Gargaro says. "Great things are happening here and we are happy and excited to be a part of it."
The Chan family will soon be moving into their brand new home at our first Kinsell Commons site on 84th street in Oakland. The family moved to the United States 10 years ago from Hong Kong with the hopes of providing a better future for their children and to live the American Dream.
