Cindy Ma
Cindy Ma's volunteer efforts have had an impact across our organization. She's a go-to volunteer who is willing to contribute when and where it's needed most. With a background in sustainable design, Cindy initially came to Habitat East Bay as a member of our Green Team volunteer committee. As part of the Green Team's efforts to keep our affiliate on track with green building, Cindy has done everything from researching sustainable construction materials to helping to facilitate our waste management efforts at events like our annual Earth Day Build-A-Thon. Beyond the Green Team, Cindy has leant her enthusiasm to the construction site, ReStore, and event preparation. Senior Volunteer Coordinators Megan Sallabedra and Sonia Saverio note that "Cindy is a chameleon! She volunteers across the board, does it all in credibly well, and always with a smile!" As HEB gears up for more homebuilding than ever before in our history, versatile volunteers like Cindy allow our organization to grow comprehensively. Thanks, Cindy!
Tell us a little bit about yourself? What’s your day job? Besides work and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity East Bay what other things do you do with your time?
I currently work as a designer for the design/build general contracting firm Three Buddhas based out of Emeryville. Besides volunteering with Habitat East Bay I also volunteer with Martin De Porres, a hospitality kitchen in San Francisco. When I do get some time to myself I like to run and hang with my cool peeps.
How did you first get involved with Habitat East Bay? What is your current role and level of involvement with us?
I joined HEB a few years ago as a Green Team member and have expanded to do some construction site work and Restore work. I recently helped make buttons during a late night planning for the Build-A-Thon, which was a lot of fun. It helps to have awesome peeps that work in the organization to make volunteering fun!
What motivates you to continue with Habitat East Bay?
I enjoy my time with HEB so it's not too hard to stay motivated to volunteer with them. Getting the opportunity to constantly learn new things from the other volunteers and interact with homeowners is an added bonus.
What have been your most memorable experiences?
My most memorable experience has been sorting cabinets for the ReStore at the Alameda warehouse. I don't know why, but that really has been the most memorable!
What are your future projects or goals at HEB?
As a green team member, I would like to see the continuation of educating homeowners on sustainable aspects of their homes so they can easily maintain the qualities and reap the benefits of their homes.
How does the mission and philosophy of HEB fit in your own life values?
I have always admired Habitat's mission to provide affordable and sustainable housing for low income families. Growing up in Oakland where affordable housing is a serious issue, it was only natural for me to find time to volunteer with Habitat. Habitat's mission also parallels greatly with some of my personal values of compassion and humility. To quote the Dalai Lama, people should always strive to turn their "greed into generosity, ignorance into wisdom and anger into compassion.”
If you could be a tool what would you be and why?
If I could be a tool, I would be a level. People don't understand how important having things level and plumb are! Being 1/16th off can really make a difference in some cases – I learned this the hard way unfortunately.
What is your favorite job on the construction site?
Finishing work – flooring was fun to put in and a lot easier that I thought it was going to be.
Why is the Green Team important to you?
The Green Team is doing something really important in that we are continuing to help assist in HEB 's mission to build sustainably. The green building informational section during HEB’s orientations and the tabling events that our committee does in the community help spread the word about HEB's efforts and commitment to healthy homes for the homeowners and sustainable homes for the environment.
