Habitat for Humanity East BayThe 2009 Earth Day Build-A-Thon, the largest in our history, was a tremendous success! More than 800 participants helped raised $200,000 and frame 20 homes in just four days. Individuals, community organizations, corporate partners, faith groups, and student groups joined together to continue to transform a former auto salvage yard in East Oakland into a healthy community for 54 deserving families.
The Earth Day Build-A-Thon is Habitat for Humanity East Bay's annual celebration of green building. We build green to take better care of our environment, our partner families, and our volunteers. Building green makes our program economically and ecologically sustainable, so that we can continue to serve families in our community. Building green also enables low-income families to enjoy the health and economic benefits of a green home and to make positive environmental changes in their community.
Our Build-A-Thon is an accelerated build. While it would typically take several months to completely frame 20 homes, we did just that in only four days! To accomplish such a tremendous feat required the participation of hundreds of community supporters. The Build-A-Thon is not only our biggest building event of the year, it is also our biggest fundraising event. Participants raised pledges, as they would for a walk-a-thon or bike-a-thon, to help raise the funds needed to purchase the building materials for the homes.
We wish to extend our deepest thanks to everybody who contributed to the success of this event, and we hope to see you next year!
